Career choice is one of the most critical decisions a person makes in life.
A career should be chosen carefully, with thought and planning, taking into account that each person has aptitudes for a variety of career paths.

Gender stereotypes dictate segregated paths for women and men in education, training and employment, thus creating barriers and obstacles with lifelong implications.
Women are often excluded from certain types of jobs, namely in STEM and ICT fields, while very few men have jobs in the care sector. Moreover, decision-making positions in companies and organisations are mostly occupied by men. Consequently, on average women are paid less than men when employed and receive lowest pensions when retired.
This implies gender-based lifelong reduced well being.
Labour markets currently face an acute shortage of skilled labour, namely in STEM and ICT fields, with high costs for economic growth. Increasing women's participation in STEM helps to build more inclusive and prosperous societies while fostering innovation, creativity, and labour productivity.

From an early age, young people absorb societal stereotypes about suitable jobs for men and women. Families also often have gendered expectations for their child’s choice of courses, even if this is unconscious.
Career guidance is especially important in supporting girls' participation in STEM by providing them with the information and resources they need to choose education and career paths that effectively match their capacities and abilities.
