What is a gender inclusive career guidance?
Career guidance is an effective tool to challenge gender-based stereotypes and promote equal opportunities in the labour market.
Although students should understand the full range of learning opportunities available to them, they often seek out or are guided towards courses that match the ‘norm’ for their gender. Gender inclusive career guidance is one way schools can use to combat gender stereotypical views and contribute to overcome barriers resulting from unconscious bias.
Starting from an early age, effective and up-to-date career guidance helps to create a more dynamic and inclusive workforce.
An inclusive career guidance is a relevant component of a whole-school approach, comprising a set of complementary dimensions:
1.
Adopt cross-cutting school practices aimed at promoting equality and diversity. This implies the creation of a supportive environment for all, also addressing any instances of gender discrimination or bias.
2.
Integrate gender equality
into the curriculum across all subjects. Refer to contributions from persons belonging
to underrepresented groups in the various disciplinary areas and fields.
3.
Provide students multiple
opportunities to learn from employers and employees about jobs and associated
educational paths. A range of enrichment activities can be used: role models,
mentoring, work visits, work experience schemes, summer camps. Be aware that
such activities do not reinforce the prevailing gender bias.
4.
Provide personalised
career guidance that encourages students to pursue their interests and talents,
regardless of gender. Use resources that challenge stereotypes and promote a
wide range of career options.
5.
Involve all stakeholders - pupils, parents, teachers and employers – and create opportunities for all of them to learn about gender bias and their negative consequences, in order to reduce the risk of reinforcing gender stereotypes during activities and discussions on study and career paths.
